Volunteering among older people is an asset for social cohesion and civic participation in Luxembourg. However, participation varies considerably across different age groups. Using SHARE data, a new study by the LISER Policy Lab shows that almost 20 % of people aged 50 and over volunteer. Those with higher levels of education, born in Luxembourg and with stronger social networks are more likely to volunteer. Conversely, older age, larger households and providing informal care to relatives are associated with lower participation. Almost half of seniors provide informal care, often at the expense of formal volunteering. To expand the volunteer base in Luxembourg, the study emphasises the importance of strengthening support and relief policies for informal carers, as well as developing more flexible and inclusive volunteering opportunities that better reflect the constraints faced by older individuals.or
