The economic effects of immigration

This lecture series brings together renowned international scholars to present state-of-the-art research on cross-border labour mobility and related fields. Topics covered include the drivers of migration and commuting flows; the political economy of immigration laws and policies; the economic impacts of mobility on origin and destination countries; effects on productivity, wages, and income inequality; citizenship and integration policies; links between migration, trade, foreign direct investment, and technology diffusion; as well as the political and cultural consequences of cross-border flows. Selected for their leading contributions to the literature and frequent publications in top academic journals, invited speakers offer cutting-edge perspectives on methods and findings in their areas of expertise. The series fosters innovative research ideas and strengthens Luxembourg’s position at the frontier of migration and mobility research.

Samuel Bazzi
University of California San Diego
Samuel is Professor of Economics at the School of Global Policy and Strategy and the Department of Economics at the University of California, San Diego, and Co-Editor of the Journal of Development Economics. His research focuses on nation-building in diverse societies, migration and cultural change, and the political economy of religion, with a particular interest in how individuals and states adapt to social and cultural diversity. His work combines theoretical insights with rich empirical analysis and includes comparative research in the United States and Indonesia. Samuel Bazzi is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and a Fellow of the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD). He is the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER Award (2020).
