Cross‐Perspectives on the Labour Market and Social Dialogue in Luxembourg

The Institut Pierre Werner (IPW), in collaboration with LISER, invites you to an evening of reflection and exchange: “Cross‐Perspectives on the Labour Market and Social Dialogue in Luxembourg”, as a tribute to John Castegnaro.

What to Expect

Following the release in 2024 of the book by Guy Castegnaro and Robert Schneider, this event revisits the life, commitment and legacy of John Castegnaro, whose work in his day addressed many of the challenges Luxembourg faces today in its labour market and social dialogue.

You will hear perspectives that connect past and present issues, including:

  • a labour market in search of qualified workers,
  • the impact and promise of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, and
  • how these challenges intersect with social partnership and dialogue.

Who’ll Be On Stage

  • Introduction by Prof. Aline Muller, Director of LISER
  • Panelists: Jean-Claude Juncker; Colette Flesch; Guy Castegnaro; Dr Patrick Thill; Dr Franz Clément; Robert Schneider
  • Moderator: Annick Goerens (RTL Lëtzebuerg)

Why COME?

  • To learn from the legacy of John Castegnaro and see how past insights apply to the present
  • To engage in debate about current labour market challenges in Luxembourg
  • To explore the role of social dialogue in shaping inclusive policies going forward

Industrial

In recent years, there has been a discernible shift in the discourse on industrial relations in Europe. Contentious collective bargaining in response to surging inflation, tighter labour markets leading to a stronger bargaining position for workers, renewed strike activity in many countries and organising drives in the low-wage service sector have been noticeable developments. These changes contrast with the preceding decades marked by the erosion of sectoral collective bargaining and associated institutions.
