As artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly transforms workplaces, understanding its impact on productivity and worker outcomes is critical. This talk presents the research agenda of ai:conomics and its methodological approach to studying AI adoption in corporate environments. I will outline the challenges of conducting (quasi-)experimental studies in firms, discussing strategies to isolate causal effects and the relevance of co-creation. A key focus will be on results from two field studies examining AI deployment in a call center setting. The first study investigates AI’s impact on worker productivity, identifying performance heterogeneity and potential efficiency gains. The second explores worker-level effects, including job satisfaction, work processes, trust, and skill development.

Maastricht University
Research Leader at Maastricht University´s Research Centre for Education and the Labour Market (ROA). She is a sociologist by training and holds a PhD in Economics from Maastricht University. Her research focuses on the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on workplaces, worker performance, skill development, and well-being. She specializes in insider econometrics and experimental research designs to rigorously assess the real-world effects of AI technologies on work and workers. Marie-Christine Fregin leads a multinational research initiative ai:conomics, that investigates the organizational implications of AI and Generative AI (GenAI) adoption. Her work integrates case studies in the corporate environment with the development of scalable methodologies to measure efficiency gains and to evaluate the broader effects of AI on workers' roles and identities. In addition, she co-leads an international experimental study, funded by the Global Partnership on AI, examining the use of Generative AI assistance in physician decision-making.

In recent years, there has been a discernible shift in the discourse on industrial relations in Europe. Contentious collective bargaining in response to surging inflation, tighter labour markets leading to a stronger bargaining position for workers, renewed strike activity in many countries and organising drives in the low-wage service sector have been noticeable developments. These changes contrast with the preceding decades marked by the erosion of sectoral collective bargaining and associated institutions.
