As artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly transforms workplaces, understanding its impact on productivity and worker outcomes is critical. This talk presents the research agenda of ai:conomics and its methodological approach to studying AI adoption in corporate environments. I will outline the challenges of conducting (quasi-)experimental studies in firms, discussing strategies to isolate causal effects and the relevance of co-creation. A key focus will be on results from two field studies examining AI deployment in a call center setting. The first study investigates AI’s impact on worker productivity, identifying performance heterogeneity and potential efficiency gains. The second explores worker-level effects, including job satisfaction, work processes, trust, and skill development.
The Discussion Paper on an AI-related topic published in 2024 by Christina Gathmann (LISER and IZA), Felix Grimm (LISER), and Erwin Winkler (University of Erlangen-Nürnberg and IZA) has been selected for the 2025 IZA Award for Innovative Research on a Pressing Public Issue (IRPPI).
